Trellys Fishing Report

by Trelly's 22 Feb 04:51 UTC

Corio Bay

Tough conditions have not been making it easy for anglers to venture out in search of a fish as of late but to those making the most of the small windows of opportunity there has been some impressive captures being reported. Inside the bay Flathead have stood out this week with some impressive numbers of fish being taken.

Anglers drifting with baits such as pilchard fillets and strips of squids have been doing well pretty much anywhere in the bay between 5-8 metres of water. You can anchor up and burley however drifting is a great way to cover ground. Alcoa Pier has still been offering some consistent fishing as of late with Australian salmon, Pinkie snapper and flathead. Casting soft plastics along the structure has been by far the most effective method for success but you will still pick up some nice fish on bait also.

Outer Harbour

Moving more into the outer harbour and the seafood basket of variety continues for anglers fishing the south part of the bay with King George Whiting, Flathead, Snapper, Pike, Salmon and Calamari all still fishing very well. The spoil grounds (either one) has been holding good numbers of all species mentioned, again soft plastics and baits have both been very effective. Fishing in 6 metres of water seems to be the sweet spot as of late. Calamari have been hanging in a bit shallower along the Curlewis bank in 3 metres of water with natural colour jigs proving to be the standout.

St Leonards

King George Whiting have been on the chew between St Leonards and Queenscliff with better tides over the past week. Bag limit captures have been on offer with fish averaging mid to high 30s with a good percentage of fish in the 40s being landed too. Gone fishing charters has been right in the thick of the action lately getting their customers on some nice fish.

The RIP

The RIP has continued to offer some sensational kingfish action this past week with both knife jigs and live baits dominating reports. Fishing the start of tides seems to be the most productive times of success with fish to over a metre being landed. When jigging it does pay to have a variety of weights handy to accommodate the flow of the tides.

Goulburn River

Another consistent week for the river levels this week which has seen again great fishing conditions.

There have been some good reports of legal sized cod caught around the moira park and Arcadia areas with trolling 15ft old mates being the best method for those using lures. Bait fishing around Toolamba has been great with plenty of cod and Yellowbelly being reported with scrub worms and yabbies working well. In the heart of Shepparton there has been some legal sized cod reported amongst plenty of smaller cod with surface fishing being the best way to target these fish in Shepparton. Downstream near the Shepparton Golf club there has been some nice sized cod reported on Bardi grubs and chicken for those wanting to bait fish in the Shepparton area.

Kialla Lakes

The levels are still low in the main lake but there has still been some Yellowbelly caught this past week. Slow rolling a soft plastic or a tn60 with a beetle spin has been the best method this week with a lot of fish being caught in the evenings. Those on kayaks have reported some Redfin and Yellowbelly caught a bit deeper with the small 10ft old mates working well for those in kayaks.

If you are on a kayak fishing the island is also a great spot as there is plenty of structure on the banks for the fish to push up into.

Shepparton Lake

The weed is getting a chop in the lake with the council removing plenty of the weed over the last week. Fishing can get a little difficult when this weed removal is going on but late afternoons there has still been the odd Redfin caught. After a week or 2 post the weed removal the fishing seems to really pick up and the temps should hopefully drop to a level where both Redfin and Yellowbelly become active in the lake.

Waranga Basin

The lake is still sitting at around 44% which is the lowest the lakes been for a while now. There has been plenty of small Redfin caught by those fishing from the banks with small spinners and plastics working great. These fish have not been huge but you can catch a dozen or so fish in a hour just before sunset. Out deeper trolling in around 15ft has been the best way to find bigger fish with some Redfin up to 38cms reported this week. The bigger fish seem to be sitting hard on the bottom during the day so make sure your lures are hitting the bottom every now and then while trolling. Bait fishing from the banks with worms has been a good way to catch big carp and Redfin. It's been pretty windy lately which can be dangerous at the basin but if you're fishing from the banks you will find plenty of fish holdOn the windblown banks with plenty of wash. Harrimans point main ramp is currently under maintenance so if you're heading to the basin you will need to access the water via the low level ramps or around at the other ramps near the caravan park area.
