Southern Spanish mackerel closure in place
by Queensland Government 14 Feb 2023 09:41 UTC
The first of two southern closures for Spanish mackerel is in place in east coast waters south of 22°S (located slightly north of Stanage Bay, between Mackay and Yeppoon) indicated in red on the map.
The closure runs from:
- 1 February 2023 to 21 February 2023
- 1 March 2023 to 21 March 2023
Strong penalties will apply to fishers found to be taking Spanish mackerel during the closure.
The fishery remains open in waters north of 22°S where recreational fishers are reminded that possession limits and boat limits apply.
Closed seasons protect fish at vulnerable times in their life cycle - such as during spawning seasons.
