The Sydney International Boat Show opened Thursday and marina exhibitors and visitors were greeted with bright sunshine and blue skies.

Having attended this show at its original location at the Agricultural Showgrounds at Moore Park in the 80s, I estimate that this was at least the 35th Sydney Show I've attended. And it continues to improve though there is a definite trend towards the "big end of town' with the average length of vessels on the marina having doubled over the years.

It is also worth noting the appearance of a collection of US exhibitors under the auspices of the NMMA (National Marine Manufacturers Association) and from Poland under the banner of Polboat (The Polish Chamber of Marine industry and Water Sports). Both representations recognizing the importance of our marine industry to their respective marine industries.

Further signs of global expansion were indicated by the Global Marina Institute endorsed Advanced Marina Management (AMM) who for the first time held a course in New Zealand during 14-19 July. There were participants from New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia attending the course. With MIA Chairman Andrew Chapman, together with two other CMM's from New Zealand, Shane McInnes and Gareth Wilson presenting the course, the participants honed their business skills in marina management. The five-day course provided participants with the next step in spearheading their marina career towards global certification. Sabine Seabrook from Westhaven Marina, stated, "course content was great... feels like on MBA crash course for marina professionals."

Closer to home, one of Australia's global tourist attractions, the Great Barrier Reef is celebrated at this time of the year. It's where Airlie Beach comes alive - the Great Barrier Reef Festival is putting on a show yet again, and with the new festival name comes plenty of new and exciting events! This year, Coral Sea Marina Resort are proud sponsors of the Great Barrier Reef Festival and they are joining forces with the festival team to put on some fantastic events for the community to enjoy. With an ongoing commitment to both the community and the environment, Coral Sea Marina Resort hopes these new events will shine a light on the Great Barrier Reef and celebrate the natural wonder located right on our doorstep. Yesterday, two environmental workshops will be hosted at the marina, designed to encourage participation in reef conservation and increase knowledge as to what individuals can do to help protect and preserve the reef.

People in the news includes the announcement of a change in leadership at the helm of d'Albora Marinas. Wayne Taranto has been appointed CEO. This appointment follows the departure of Suzanne Davies as outgoing CEO and heralds the beginning of the second stage of d'Albora's transition into a world class marina and leisure operator. The recent acquisition of three new marina properties (Horizon Shores, Port of Airlie and Martha Cove) brings the d'Albora stable to 10 marinas across the eastern seaboard. Wayne's 25 years' experience in high end hospitality and entertainment management will take Australia's largest marina operator to the next level of service offering and continue the drive towards realizing the group's ambition of providing a distinctive and exceptional customer experience.

Next week we will bring you a list of many of the new launchings and product releases at the SIBS and if you haven't already visited the show tickets are available on line.
