Did you know calamari are managed under the Scalefish Rules? © Department of NRE Tasmania

In 2026, NRE Tas will be proposing changes to the Scalefish Rules through the Scalefish Rules Remake. This is an opportunity to improve how we manage the scalefish fishery.

But before we start drafting specific proposed rule changes for consultation, we want your suggestions and ideas.

We're seeking your feedback

  • What are some issues with the current Scalefish Rules?
  • Why is it important to address these issues?
  • How could a change to the Scalefish Rules help?

Your feedback will help inform what changes to the rules we consult on in 2026.

We'll be prioritising changes that:

  • Support recovery of depleted and depleting species
  • Help other species stay sustainable into the future
  • Simplify rules and make them more effective and enforceable

You can provide feedback by survey, email, post or via your representative body.

These channels will be open until 11:59pm Wednesday 19 November.

Have your say

Next steps

After we consider your feedback, we will draft specific proposed changes to the Scalefish Rules.

You will have an opportunity to have your say on these proposed changes during public consultation in 2026.

Any rule changes that are made will take effect 1 November 2026.
