The club were delighted to welcome Linda Roy and her daughter Holly Smith to the prize-giving for the annual race for the Timmy Roy trophy.
This trophy is awarded to the winner of the Mirror Open meeting at the club and commemorates Linda's husband Timmy's long involvement with the club. For the last 2 years of his life he'd sailed a Mirror there, having moved out of the Laser class. With young grandchildren the Mirror gave him chance to take them out on the water. Club rules require all entries to be double handed, and spinnakers are not permitted to be used.
Race Officer Bernard Clark, assisted by Andrew Storer, set a course from the club line out into the lagoon with mark B as the first rounding, followed by C, D and back to A. This was almost a windward leeward course and ensured that the fleet returned to the vicinity of the start as they completed their race. With 3 races to be sailed and the tide heavily impacting on the time available for the racing it was a prompt start at 10.30 for the fleet.
Race 1 saw close racing between Gemma/Isla Dow and Vince/Fiona Phillips, and a mistake by Gemma and Isla at the last mark gave the lead to Vince and Fiona which they held to the finish.
Race 2 saw Dave Cooper have a good start and take the lead followed closely by the Dows. The Phillips boat had an issue with their mainsail and this saw them drop back. William and Harry Steel opted to have beach time rather than racing. Dave led at the windward mark and all the way to the finish followed by Gemma and Isla with Vince and Fiona making a late charge.
The tide was starting ebb by the start of race 3 and this caught the fleet out, resulting in a general recall. Whilst waiting for the re-start Vince took a nasty bash to the head, but carried on bravely! The fleet got away cleanly on the second start, with Vince and Fiona leading at the first mark followed closely by the rest of the fleet. They held the lead to the finish despite the tide by then ripping out of the harbour.
The event was won by Vince and Fiona Phillips, second place went to Gemma and Isla Dow and third place to William and Harry Steel. Dave sailed really well but due to being on his own his results did not count.
