A win for fans of the humble sea mullet

Our work and that of industry means you'll be able to enjoy fresh local mullet on the BBQ with a squeeze of lemon for years to come.

Between April and August, the ocean beach fishery uses seine nets from the Tweed River up to K'gari to capture sea mullet during their annual migration from NSW.

Seine net fishing is highly specific in operation — catch is submerged for most of the event and with the low levels of bycatch and high chance of survival in discarded species, it's a sustainably recognised fishing practice within Australia.

We recently applied for and were granted approval to make sure this fishery maintains its recognition as an approved Wildlife Trade Operation.

This permits the export of product from an operation that is not detrimental to the survival or conservation of any species it may interact with.
