Derbyshire Youth Sailing is pleased to announce the 14th Derbyshire Youth Sailing Series dates and the ongoing support for 2014 of Peak Dinghy Spares who will be providing chandlery and other racing sailing services throughout the year, as well as providing the 14th series prize vouchers and Best Improver Trophy.

We are expecting to see plenty of new entries this year to come along and enjoy the racing and social scene of Derbyshire Youth Sailing. Our website provides locations of, and links to, all ten Derbyshire Sailing Clubs.

  • New entries are welcome. The series is open to Derbyshire based, school age, dinghy racing sailors.

  • Competitors must sail to RYA level 2 as a minimum and know the basics of racing.
  • All competitors must bring their own dinghy, a borrowed dinghy or make their own arrangements with the sailing club for dinghy hire.

  • All competitors must have adequate insurance for racing.
  • Derbyshire Youth Sailing owns two dinghies (1 Optimist, 1 Topper) which are available for short term lease at affordable rates. Please contact DYS via the website for more details.

Melissa Wellbourn, Chair of DYS comments "Our series of one day events is a multi-class, dinghy racing series that allows the young sailors of Derbyshire to venture out from their own home sailing club and experience sailing at different venues". Melissa adds, "They get the chance to meet and make new friends as well as pick up on the latest racing sailing techniques and practice them. Most of all, the sailors just enjoy the thrill and competition of the races, as well as the friendships in the dinghy park and clubhouse".

To qualify for a series result and a chance at the series prizes - including cash value vouchers - the sailors only need to compete at any six of the ten events through the season from April to September.

The event races are sailed on one course and multiple fleet starts may be used, depending on entry numbers. The recorded average lap times are corrected using the Portsmouth Yardstick system, so that the sailors can be ranked in place order based on speed, even though they are sailing in different types of dinghy.

Event and series scoring provides, in effect, three age group competitions and an overall competition for which prizes are awarded. The age groups each compete for different Series Trophies:

  • Junior – up to school year 6 The Ellen MacArthur Trophy
  • Intermediate – school years 7 – 9 inclusive The Ben Ainslie Trophy
  • Senior – school year 10 and above The Andrew Simpson Trophy
  • Overall – all competitors The Derbyshire Shield
The Saunders Trophy is awarded to the highest placed girl competitor in the Overall Series.

Each event has prizes or trophies for the leading sailors and some clubs also present spot prizes for best improved or rewarding special efforts.

  • Membership of DYS is FREE. However, there are entry fees to compete in each of the events
  • Singlehanders: £10 pre-registered, £12 pay on the day
  • Doublehanders: £13 pre-registered, £15 pay on the day
  • The entry fee for your first ever DYS event at your home club will be refunded, although donations are welcomed
Pre-registration is through our website www.dysailing.co.uk and is available until midnight on the Monday of the week prior to the event.

Anyone who is not sure whether they can join in should get in touch with us through the website or come along to one of the early events. We also always welcome spectators who can enjoy a stroll along the water side at most of the clubs and watch the racing for free.
