For our last event of 2023, Derbyshire Youth Sailors will be heading to the south of the County to Swarkestone Sailing Club on the 21st October. An ex-gravel pit, Swarkestone has some unique (to DYS) features to navigate around; landing on the sunken island is great fun but not ideal in race conditions!
We thought the sailing was close in 2022, but this year it really is all to play for. Luke is leading the way, but with 4 points between the top 3 it could all change for the Overall and Senior winners. The Intermediate class are also having a great battle with the top 4 sailors all within 11 points of each other and there are some sizable discards to shake off. In the meantime, there are a few sailors who have yet to complete 5 events and if they turn up on the 21st the whole board could be turned upside down. It really is all down to the last race.
This is all very exciting and great fun to watch, but if you are new to sailing, racing or the DYS series you might be thinking this is not the event for you; but it certainly is. During a DYS event we have a full range of sailors attending; those that are competing nationally against their fleet and new sailors who are just starting out and can sail a triangular course. Where possible, we provide on the water coaching for sailors who find themselves at the back of the fleet, so it's a great way to learn 'on the job'. Our Swarkestone event is an ideal opportunity to give it a go.
To finish off the day, we will be having our 2023 Awards night after enjoying a pizza supper; always a great chance for our sailors to chill out, socialise and celebrate everyone's successes of the year.
All the details and registration can be found on www.dysailing.org.
We look forward to seeing you at Swarkestone SC.
