New Zealand Food Safety today issued a public health warning against collecting shellfish in the eastern Bay of Plenty region between Opape and East Cape. Paralytic shellfish toxins have been detected in mussels from Te Kaha at levels more than double the safe limit set by MPI.
Another warning remains in place between Mount Maunganui and Ford Road, near Maketu.
