Trelly's Weekly Fishing Report © Trellys
When I started compiling this weekly fishing report back in early September I really had to dig deep to figure out where the fish were biting. I would search fishing pages on social media and even ring around tackle stores looking for information.
Now, I have so much information that I do not know where to start. The fishing has hit top gear here in Victoria. It doesn't seem to matter where you drop a line in, there's a chance that you will catch something.
I had the privilege of fishing in a private farm dam with some friends last Sunday afternoon and we caught 12 - 15 Yellowbelly and a few carp. All fish were caught on worms and very pale in colour due to the water in the dam being so dirty.
Lake Hume
Lake Hume continues to produce some great Yellowbelly fishing. Yellowbelly are being caught by anglers in boats and off the bank at the moment.
I think the trick to catching Yellowbelly from the bank at Lake Hume is to fish a steep bank.
My friend Sandy trolled some lovely brown trout around the 60cm size in Lake Hume recently. He trolled them on Tassie Devil lures. Sandy is quite intricate and dedicated, and loves to make things as complex as he possibly can, but he gets rewarded with some lovely fish.
Here is a video that Sandy filmed catching those big trout:
Lake Nillahcootie
Lake Nillahcootie is ticking over nicely with consistent reports of Yellowbelly and Murray cod being caught. I have not caught any decent sized fish myself, nor have I heard any reports of decent sized fish being caught, but there certainly are plenty of fish biting.
Apart from my own recent boat fishing trip over there, all reports are from anglers fishing from the bank with bait.
I have no doubt that those fishing from a boat are doing well too, I just have not heard any reports myself.
Goulburn River
The Goulburn River continues to fish really well. Local Shepparton fishing identity Mick Marshell continues to catch Yellowbelly and Murray cod just casting lures from the bank in the Shepparton area. The Murray cod have all been released.
When I presented at the Murray Codference in Shepparton recently I was shown a lot of photos from locals who had been catching Yellowbelly in the Shepparton area, on both bait and lures.
I was also shown photos of some great trout that have been caught upstream closer to Lake Eildon by a keen fly fisherman. Some of those trout were very big.
Ovens Rivers
My local river, the Ovens River has really turned up the heat over the last couple of weeks. I have been catching a few really nice Yellowbelly on worms. In fact, I have caught 4 Yella's between 40 and 47cm in the last week.
I kept 2 for a feed and released 2. One of my fish was caught on 2 live shrimp, the rest were caught using Jan Juc Worms, which can now be found in store at Trelly's.
Something worth noting about the Ovens River at the moment is the carp. There's no more than usual, but the average size is enormous.
My friend Sonny caught an 80cm carp a few days ago. It is now his new PB carp. A few days later I caught an 82cm carp, my new PB.
Between us we have caught a number of carp in the 75-80cm range recently.
There seems to be very few small carp in the ovens River at the moment. I caught one about 15cm long the day before writing this report, but it was the only one. The rest have been enormous.
These carp have been caught in various sections of the Ovens River downstream of Wangaratta.
Ovens River
The Ovens River has been a little bit hit and miss this week as a reasonable sized flush of water has pushed through after last week's rainfall.
I have caught a few carp, but that's been about it. My friend Lisa and her daughter caught a nice Yellowbelly downstream of Wangaratta while fishing during the flush.
The flush has now passed and the water has receded and cleared up quite a bit already. I am quite confident that things will stabilise and the fishing will be very good again very soon.
When I say very good, I am talking about having lots of action. I have been catching a lot of carp, Murray cod and Trout cod lately. The cod have all been released of course.
Although I have caught a few Yellowbelly in the Ovens River, they have not been overly active. I've definitely seen better Yellowbelly fishing in the Ovens.
Lake Dartmouth
There have been some nice trout caught in Lake Dartmouth in recent weeks. Not huge numbers of fish, but many angler are picking up 2 or 3 fish, sometimes a few more.
The trout that I know of, have all been caught down deep by anglers trolling with downriggers at around 10 meters depth, using Tassie Devil lures.
