Yellowbelly © Trellys
The great Yellowbelly fishing has continued in many areas this week, while it is still a bit slow to warm up in other. I had a fantastic Yellowbelly fishing session myself this week which I will talk about further down the report.
Overall things are still a little bit on the cool side, but the fishing is warming up more and more each week. As I sit here typing approximately 10cm of fresh snow is sitting on the ground at Falls Creek and Mt Hotham. An October snowfall like that seems to be a sign of an endless winter. Thankfully the forecast for the weekend is 28 degrees here in Wangaratta.
Lake Eildon
There have been some nice Yellowbelly and Murray cod caught at Lake Eildon this week with quite a few photos of both species doing the rounds on social media.
I also saw some photos of small redfin caught off the bank near Bonnie Doon this week. They were caught angling with worms.
Lake Nillahcootie
I am still yet to hear much from Lake Nillahcootie. I was hoping to head over there this week myself but the wind has been relentless. Monday was the best day of the week to head to Lake Nillahcootie but I had to go elsewhere.
Lake Nillahcootie can be a very windy place. For some reason it is the windiest lake that I fish and unless the wind forecast is very low I won't even waste my time heading over there.
Hopefully next week I will get a chance...
Lake Hume
The Yellowbelly are firing at Lake Hume, with many people now catching them. Those with boats are getting the best results. In fact, I have not heard of any being caught off the bank yet this year.
There has also been some quite large brown trout caught up there this week by anglers trolling winged lures such as Tassie Devils. Pink seems to be the stand out colour.
Unfortunately, I have not heard of any redfin being caught at Lake Hume in recent times.
Ovens River
I have fished the Ovens River 3 times this week with mixed success. On one trip my friend Sonny and I caught 2 Murray cod (which we released of course), 2 carp and 4 Yellowbelly. 3 of the 4 Yellowbelly were legal sized fish. We kept one for a feed and released the others.
All of our fish were caught on worms. The other two times I fished the Ovens River I caught nothing. Talk about hit and miss!
I was fishing with a young fella named Xanda on Tuesday afternoon, and we caught quite a few Murray crayfish on our fishing rods. We caught them on worms.
The fact that the crayfish are still so active is an indication that the water is still really cold and could explain why the fishing has been a bit temperamental.
Things are slowly warming up, even though it may not feel like it today, and it won't be too long before the fishing is more consistent.
Campaspe River
I have had a number of photos sent to me of Yellowbelly caught in the Campaspe River this week. Exactly where they were caught I am not sure, but they were all nice sized fish around the 40cm size and were caught using worms as bait.
If you have any favourite fishing spots along the Campaspe River, now is a good time to go and try them.
Yabbies
I have been experiencing some quite good yabbying lately. They yabbies seem to have started biting earlier than usual in some of my favourite yabby dams this year.
If you're like me and like yabbying, be excited because there's a few yabbies on the bite.
