The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) published research in November which confirmed a sizeable population of Australian sardine in Tasmanian and Bass Strait waters, large enough to sustain a commercial fishery.

NRE Tas has since produced development guidelines, with principles that will ensure a sardine fishery would be environmentally sustainable, have best-practice governance, and deliver long-term benefits for Tasmanians.

Lead IMAS Researcher Tim Ward, along with NRE Tas Fisheries Managers, will be hosting these community information sessions around Tassie for the public between February 18-26. It's an opportunity to learn more about the recent findings and development guidelines, and ask any questions you may have.

Note, at this early stage, these sessions are for sharing information and answering questions about the science and fishery guidelines. Consultation on any rules or regulations for a sardine fishery will follow the normal processes, including statutory public consultation where you can have your say, later this year.
