Fish aggregating devices (FADs) have been deployed around Tasmania year-round, making it easier for you to target pelagic fish such as tuna, sharks, marlin and yellowtail kingfish. Originally developed for commercial fishing, FADs have become increasingly used around Australia for recreational fishing opportunities.
Tassie fishing gurus Jonah Yick and Glen Saltmarsh gave us their tips for catching kingies off the FADs, as they're attracted to structure.
- Try a small Jig, popper or stick bait
- Circle the FAD about 100m off, trolling a small tuna skirt or green lumot- coloured diving lure.
- Drift towards it from the windward side, starting 200m away, and then past it, while casting a stick bait or popper,
- When close, put a slow pitch jig of around 80g down to see if kingfish are feeding on the bait fish.
Find your closest FAD.
