Why
A cold front that crossed southeastern NSW is heading into the southern Tasman and deepening into a low, while its associated trough is heading to the far northeast corner, bringing a gusty southerly wind change in the wake.
This will be followed by a high pressure ridge across the state, with easing onshore winds for Christmas period. Then north to northeasterly winds will strengthen ahead of the next cold front later in the week, bringing another gusty southerly wind change behind.
Where
On Tuesday on Hunter, Sydney and Illawarra coasts, seas of 2 metres and southerly swells of 4 metres are expected. On Wednesday, on the Macquarie, Hunter and Sydney coasts, seas of 1.5 to 2 metres and southerly swells of 3 to 4 metres are expected..
BOM is warning that on all those coasts, conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.
Swell period
Mostly about 11 seconds.
