Firefly National Championships 2024 at Restronguet Sailing Club - Day 4

by Jono Pank 1 Aug 2024 07:25 UTC 27 July - 2 August 2024

Wednesday's distance race (The Gore) was rescheduled to Thursday due to light winds forecast. The forecast wind was not due to materialise until 2ish so the fleet was under AP from 11 onwards. The fleet eventually launched at 2;30, having watched Alex Yee get his triathlon gold medal. The fleet sailed out into a direction southerly sea wind for racing in Carrick Roads.

The race officer put the fleet under immediate U flag in an attempt to start quickly.

It was pin bias coming off the line with the fleet tacking quite early, right hand side dominated on the first beat. The mark was offset to the right, relatively unshifty beat, port tack was the long tack. A left shift a few minutes in advantaged those who held on starboard off the line before heading up to the mark.

At the first mark, Ben Tylecote and Lucy Cox and then Jamie and Joe McEwen followed, Steve (snr) Tylecote Tash Hughes-Armstrong followed. Arthur Greaves and Will McEwen had also sailed themselves into contention.

The reaches were light and fairly arduous with a few people getting caught out low but mostly the fleet staying in order. Up the second beat the breeze remained very stable with most of the fleet holding long on port and then tacking up to the top of course.

The top 5 remained the same going into the final run.

Steve went low and managed to gain second place squeezing past the McEwens.

Ben Tylecote and Lucy Cox won their first nationals race by some distance. Followed by dad Steve and Tash. The McEwens filling the podium.

Arthur/William finished in a comfortable 4th followed by Rob and Mel Sherrington 5th, and Jono Pank and Helena Lucas MBE taking 6th.

Well done to the race officer for getting a race completed against the odds. And then sending us ashore for paella at Flushing Sailing Club. Sailing resumes on Thursday for the 13 mile Sir Ralph Gore Cup and Marlow Ropes Trophy in Falmouth Bay.
