Tasmanian Fishing Report June 2024

by Spot On Fishing Hobart 21 Jun 2024 21:17 UTC

Anglers who have been facing the cold conditions are reaping the rewards of their efforts. From well conditioned trout up in the highlands to massive swordfish in the murky sea, and many different species in between.

With a great end to the trout season angler are able to fish a few more waters during this off season, with IFS opening Bradys, Binnie and Tungatinah for the rest of the 23/24 season. Anglers are encouraged to try these fisheries over this time of year. IFS are asking anglers to log their accomplishment in the InFish app 2.0. (this does not release you're fishing spots to the public.)

The Derwent River has been producing some very nice bream, searun trout and aussie salmon. Fishing in the upper reaches of the river has been a great place to find sea runners and some decent sized resident trout. Further down towards Old Beach and Berridale have been some hot spots for targeting fiesty bream, on either the fly or hard bodies.

With day light hours shortening it has extended the time for night fishing. Flounder and garfish have been found in large numbers, from late afternoon and into dark. Sheltered bays and coastal inlets have been productive.

Bruny Island has been fishing well with tuna, squid and snapper being caught around the island. Both squid and snapper have been found close in and around Adventure Bay in the past few weeks, whilst the tuna have been caught mostly around the Friars but also up the eastern coast line into storm bay.

Bottom bouncing and deep dropping for striped trumpeter, jackass morwong and blue-eye trevalla, has been going well for anglers after a feed of bottom fish. Both the morwong and trumper have been found on reefs and structure around 40ms in depth. Blue-eye have been caught of 500m out the back of Maria and Schouten Island. Three swordfish have also been caught by anglers fishing the shelf off the south-eastern coast, varying in sizes form 125kg up to 200kg.
