NSSA National Youth Regatta at Draycote Water Sailing Club - Day 2

After the rain and temporary loss of wind issues of Day 1, Day 2 in the NSSA National Youth Championships, sponsored by Fernhurst Books, seemed to go more smoothly.
Once again 4 races were held in the Championship fleets but the Regatta fleets, for the less experienced sailors, squeezed in 5 races today and so have now sailed 9 races compared to their more experienced competitors 8.
But all competitors were back ashore in time for dinner today and a growing number of protests to entertain the protest committee. And, significantly, one discard is now allowed for in the results.
It must be stressed that these reports are based on the published results and these are clearly labelled as 'provisional', so this report should be treated with the same caution. Nevertheless we will still seek to provide an overview of the results for each fleet as they stand on the latest scoreboard. They are also, in some cases, subject to protest.
In the Regatta fleet on the red course there are 25 Topper 5.3s and 14 racing on handicap. In the Topper 5.3s, Jai Dhaliwal of Northamptonshire has maintained the lead which we had reported after Day 1. However, a revision of the Day 1 results meant that Jasper Nicholls, again of Northamptonshire, was actually leading after Day 1, but has now slipped back to second, despite having won four of the total races sailed. Although it should be noted that there is still a protest / arbitration to be held from this fleet.
In the Handicap Regatta fleet, the Fusions still lead, with the top three places. James Gillmore, from Plymouth, has also won four races in total and now heads the leaderboard, followed by Thomas Zanyi of Northamptonshire.
The 3 single-handed fleets are on the green course. In the ILCA 4, the overnight leader, Robbie Hudson of Kent, continues in that place after a rather dominant day, achieving three first places and a second. Yesterday's prediction that Tyrii Bell of Cambridgeshire would bounce up the leaderboard once the discard kicked in has come to pass and they are now in second, tied on points with Electra Reeves, also of Cambridgeshire.
Yesterdays Mr Consistent in the ILCA 6 (with four second places), Julien Rohart of Oxford, got bored with being the bridesmaid and put in three first places and a second today to see him lead the fleet after Day 2. Matthew Botten, from CMYC, was unable to repeat his three first places of Day 1, but did get one more win and four top four places to end up in second. These two are a long way ahead of the rest of the fleet.
The Topper 5.3 Day 1 results have also seen some revisions. Yesterday's leader, Keah Edwards of Cambridgeshire, actually had an even better day yesterday than reported, but did not do so well on Day 2. The winner of Day 2, and now overall leader, is Daniel Hebditch of Kent, followed by Robert Hole of Cambridgeshire.
The handicap fleet on the yellow course has now been split into a fast and slow fleet and some adjustments have been made to the Day 1 results. Yesterday I expressed surprise that the leaders, in a RS200, had three top 4 results and one in the twenties. This has now been revised to 6th place (which is their discard) and they continue to lead the fast fleet from Ben Sherry and Adam Aziz of Bosworth Lake in a 420.
In the slow fleet, Noah Byrd of Northamptonshire in an Optimist would have been leading after Day 1, but he didn't have such a good day today and is now in second place. The best sailor today was Jacob Lutton from Northamptonshire in an ILCA 7, but he is carrying four OCSs from Day 1 which puts him down the leaderboard. Current leader is George Jacobs of Derbyshire in a Byte C1.
For Wednesday, the Regatta fleets continue with their fleet racing, but for the Championship fleets there is a break as the Mount Haes Trophy is run in the morning and then in the afternoon there is an all-in pursuit race in which Draycote Water Sailing Club members have been invited to compete - that should be a lot of fun!
