Sand Flathead cuts shock
by TARFish 20 Apr 2023 07:49 UTC
Today is a difficult one for all recreational fishers. The immediate halving of the sand flathead bag and size limits is a complete surprise. We acknowledge that there is a serious problem with sand flathead stocks and the Ministers precautionary approach is responsible and also sets a precedent in fisheries management in Tasmania. We look forward to the release of the peer reviewed stock assessment and note that the Minister has taken onboard TARFishs advice to have it scrutinised through a scientifically rigorous peer review process. The package of proposed changes to the Scalefish rules are extensive and we will be taking the next couple of days to review them in detail and respond fully. We welcome the Ministers commitment to extensive community consultation and TARFish will be attending all sessions and will also hold separate opportunities for fishers to provide feedback which will guide TARFishs position and response to the proposed changes. |
