RS300 Inland Championship at Pennine Sailing Club

by Cheryl Wood 8 Jun 2021 16:58 UTC 29-30 May 2021

The RS300s gathered from across Scotland, Wales, England and even the Isle of Wight for our 2021 Inland championship at Pennine Sailing Club with all its Yorkshire hospitality. As predicted by the weather forecast we had a light wind weekend with loads of sunshine for event number two on our RS300 Rooster National Tour.

Our class association demo boat arrived (thanks to Tom Moore for bringing her) and was adopted straight away by a young local enthusiastic sailor.

A social distanced briefing was held and the fleet headed out to test the water to start the first race of the weekend. Tom Moore got off the line and headed around the windward mark first closely followed by Oliver Mills and Chris Massey. They held these positions to complete the race.

Second start Pete Mackin (our 2020 champion) found his feet and joined with Paul Rigg and yet again Chris to top the winning three.

The third race had a short course move due to a change and decrease in the wind direction. Paul R moved up to first place with Tom and Chris still on his heals.

All ashore and the Yorkshire hospitality began with a free pint of the locally brewed beer and of course you can't come North without a Yorkshire pudding roast dinner. With loads to catch up on the social distanced socialising led into the early hours.

Day two and the wind increased with the race officer keen to get us three races in.

The sailors were wholly prepared after sampling all the club's breakfast options. Water Called with the fleet setting out for a 1030hrs start. In the fourth race our fleet's competitive starts had attracted the club's jury boat who were watching the line. Matt Pedlow attempted a head start but was soon caught out on an individual recall. Tom went on for his second win of the weekend with Paul R and Chris still stuck close behind.

The last two races saw Paul R go on to push for gold winning both races. So he is our new 2021 RS300 Inland Champion = "big congratulations". Tom Moore was second overall and Chris Massey third. The weekend's hero award went to Martin Harrison for his pure dedication to the fleet travelling over land and sea to attend. First, third and hero were awarded a limited edition Rooster National Tour cap as prizes.

A big thank you from Pennine Sailing Club to everyone for attending our event. Thank you to our Pennine Sailing Club hosting volunteers. And of course to Rooster our RS300 National Tour sponsor. Our next event is the RS Summer Regatta at Royal Torbay YC. I hope to see you there.
