Three Net Free Zones were declared in Queensland four years ago (1 Nov 2015) by the current Labor Government as part of an election promise long fought for, and hard won.
Mackay and Rockhampton achieved the other two and have been taking advantage of the opportunities, promoting their rec fishing region and enjoying a resurgence in both local and tourist participation, with fisher experience steadily increasing as stocks rebuild.
Cairns has not been idle either and a group of dedicated locals have joined with Cairns Regional Council to develop and promote our unique and extraordinary location and destination, and our fisher experience is gaining traction too, along with our all important reputation.
The three regions have worked closely together to advance not only each NFZ, but the three together as a marketing collaboration. Each year we hold a forum, Mackay and Rocky have had their turn to host these, now it's ours, and it will be held in a few weeks, the 9th November.
You are welcome to attend. CAREFISH has worked steadily, sometimes furiously, towards where we are today in terms of a better rec fisher outcome, both for Queensland and for Cairns. Many who assisted us and stood shoulder to shoulder with us will be attending the forum, and that presents you with a very valuable opportunity to learn from individuals and organisations, and to offer your own insights, develop plans for your organisation, and Cairns, and network.
Bill Sawynok of InfoFish will be conducting the forum and Cairns Regional Council fully supports it. The future of recreational fishing in Cairns is looking very positive, and your input is vital.
