2019 Eric Twiname Team Racing Championship

by Richard Aspland 14 Oct 2019 10:17 UTC 12-13 October 2019

The 2019 RYA Eric Twiname Team Racing Championship junior and youth champions were crowned yesterday following a packed weekend of racing in Farmoor Reservoir.

Rutland Green claimed the title of youth champions racing in the Firefly while RS Tera Prodigy took the junior honours in the RS Feva after an intense weekend with over 390 races completed.

The competition got under way at Oxford Sailing Club in a light and stable breeze with the race committee turning around 250 races on day one for the 54 teams.

Day two began with an intense rain storm which didn't dampen the spirits of the young sailors. As the weather settled down the stage one series continued to culminate in the finals series.

From the 54 teams from around the country, Rutland Green beat Winchester 2-0 in the youth final after coming through semi-final wins against WOSC A and RGS respectively.

WOSC A took third place with a 2-0 win over RGS in the petit-final.

RS Tera Prodigy took a 1-0 lead over Chew in the junior final with Rutland Gold also going 1-0 up against RHS in the petit-final.

However, the junior final and petit-final were the only races of the weekend to succumb to the elements as the breeze continued to rise with very strong gusts, that meant RS Tera Prodigy claimed gold, Chew silver and Rutland Gold bronze following a winner takes all single race final.

RYA Event Director Niall McLeod said: "It was another fantastic weekend of racing and I can't praise the sailors, race committee and volunteers highly enough.

"This is an event with a lot of moving parts and everything seemed to go so smoothly - and that is a great compliment to everyone involved. From racing, to sailor changeovers, to boat set up. Everyone here really comes together and that makes for a great event.

"Thanks also go out to the Eric Twiname Trust and Oxford Sailing Club who support the event and without them it wouldn't be the success it is."

Full results from the junior event can be found here and youth here.
