Calamari only live for around a year and tend to die after spawning.
You can help make sure enough calamari spawn so a new generation is available the following year by:
- Observing the spawning closures; and
- Voluntarily releasing small calamari with less than 20cm mantle length. Take the jig in your hand and invert it, allowing the calamari to fall back into the water.
Young calamari can double in size very quickly. Larger squid produce more viable eggs so your actions will help return calamari on a pathway to sustainability.
