Boat access set to ramp up at Bundalong

Freshwater anglers who launch their boats at the Bundalong boat ramp near Yarrawonga can look forward to catching Lake Mulwala's famous Murray Cod quicker, as a new dual lane boat ramp is set for development on the Victorian side of the lake.

Visiting the site today, Labor Upper House Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, said improving access to popular fishing destinations such as Lake Mulwala, is a key element of the Andrew Labor Government's Target One Million plan, which includes $9 million from recreational fishing licence fees, to get more people fishing, more often.

The $280,000 Majors Lane project will include a double lane boat ramp, formalised car parking, a new toilet and visitor facilities.

Renovations will also be undertaken at two smaller boat ramps at Pasley Street and Pyke Street in Bundalong, where the Ovens and Murray rivers meet.

Lake Mulwala is currently being drawn down over the winter period to undertake a weed control operation and maintenance works to help improve the quality of the lake.

During this time the new double lane boat ramp will be constructed at the Majors Lane site with enough length to extend into deeper water.

"Lake Mulwala is considered one of the most productive Murray Cod fisheries in Australia, and the Andrews Labor Government is supporting this project to give fishers better facilities and attract even more fishing tourism to North East Victoria," Ms Symes said.

"The new and upgraded boat ramps at Bundalong will improve this great fishing spot and boost local and visiting angler numbers.

"Improving fishing opportunities and facilities is a key component of the Target One Million plan, which continues to grow recreational fishing across country Victoria, giving families better opportunities to spend some quality time together outdoors."

This will allow more people to access the lake, will prevent wake boats displacing rocks at the edge of the concrete apron when they power onto trailers and will reduce the risk of boats being damaged as they approach the ramps.

The project has been jointly funded by Goulburn Murray Water $30,000, Moira Shire $15,000, NSW Roads and Maritime Services $150,000 and the Victoria Fisheries Authority $85,000 through Target One Million.
