RC Laser TT at Poole Radio Yacht Club

by Dave Fowler 18 Mar 2014 13:52 UTC 15 March 2014

Poole RYC got the first RC Laser TT of 2014 under way with perfect sailing conditions, sun and wind. Spring was definitely here.

The local club sailors were out in force, with 4 visitors from afar. OD Peter Wiles and his team moved the marks around and set a triangular course using the middle 2/3 thirds of the lake, with a gate at the leeward end of the course this made for more tactical planning for which mark was better, allowing helms some big gains during the day when they got it correct with the wind shifts.

With the morning racing underway Dave Fowler stamped his authority on the proceedings (or was he still buzzing from the 4 cappuccinos he had on the 3.5 hour drive down) by winning 4 of the 7 pre lunch races, with Chris Treagust taking 2 wins and Laurie Draper 1 just before lunch, Local helm Peter Pritchard, pulled in a 2nd and a 3rd, but wasn't consistent, and kept on getting hit by starboard boats for some reason.

After lunch 8 races were sailed it similar wind strengths, on the boarder between 'B' & 'C' rigs, there was quite a lot of swapping, but the top 3 mostly remained in the 'B' rig with all helms dropping to the 'C' for the last race of the day, as the wind increased. Fowler once again showed a clean pair of heals to the others buy winning 7 of the races, with Treagust wining the other.

The results don't pay justice to the tight racing had between the top 4 helms, and the groups further down the ranking, with a lot of place changes, with the tactical racing that this one design boat gives to the helms. The days racing was very enjoyable and very well managed by the OD and his team.

A big thank you to Poole Radio Yacht Club for putting on the event.

With a race within a race for the Johnson family The wind was blowing from the clubhouse direction for the ten RC Laser entries. It looked to be a stock 'B' rig all-dayer, but with the light patch at the entry point, a bit of extra sail cloth helps you get through the lulls. Posted on 6 Oct

With the wind forever increasing in strength a couple of 'D' rigs were brought out The showers had just about died out on arrival, to leave us with a nice Blowy Westerly. No need for the big sails today and it was a decider for the next 2 sail sizes, giving us a mix for the first couple of races. Posted on 18 Jun

No question on rig size - the smallest D rigs were chosen For today's racing the wind was very much in the upper numbers. The forecast was for it to drop but with 20 - 25 knits and direction NW. No question on rig size - the smallest D rig. Posted on 27 Mar

Wet gear didn't stop the whole fleet racing the 15 races After the break for Mother's Day the turnout for the twelfth race day in the Winter Series was well attended with 11 sailors braving the "Ides of March". Was it to be a bad omen for one or all? Posted on 19 Mar

Course allows boats to be closer than normal and with more possible infringements The Race Team using the wind direction of SE and 8 knots speed set a narrow course with a wing mark to form the triangle for the triangle sausage format. This effectively gave two downwind legs, a reach along the leeward end of the course and two beats. Posted on 27 Feb

Big winds again! Before racing started the breeze forecast during the week showed over 20 knots predicted by midday. We found the predicted direction of WSW. This gave a start in front of the playground and windward mark some 60m into the lake. Posted on 5 Feb
