Mulled wine, hot mince pies, Stollen, and a big tub of Quality Street!

Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th were this year's "Twixmas" Regatta for radio yachts at Fleetwood MYC. 19 DF95's and 36 IOM's has initially entered but we had a few dropouts and so just 17 DF95's and 30 IOM's actually competed.

Saturday started with almost no wind which came & went and shifted around the mainly easterly direction. Eventually it sort of settled at about 3 to 4 knots and we were able to complete 10 races interspersed by breaks for hot mince pies & mulled wine plus lunch before the 3pm cut off time. Peter Baldwin (Birkenhead) beat John Tushingham (Keighley) on count back to take the win, with John Brierley (Birkenhead) rounding out the podium

On Sunday there was more of the same shifty light winds for the start, but now we had 2 fleets for the R.O. Shaun Holbeche and scorer Judith Baldwin, to manage. But they cracked on and managed to get 14 heats (7 races) completed by 3pm with lots of mince pies etc consumed and a slightly stronger and steadier wind compared to Saturday. The event was won by Rob Walsh (Fleetwood) by 1 point from Graham Elliott (Birkenhead) and James Hadden (Gosport) in third.

The scoring for both events was undertaken using a trial and prototype scoring system with discards (drops) at 3, 7 and 14 races. Thus the iOM's were fortunate to have two discards after only seven races.

The next big events coming up for DF95's and IOM's are both at WLYC Southport on the 7/8 Feb and 7/8 March respectively. For further details on these and others, see the full list of events for 2026 on the MYA website, www.mya-uk.org.uk/events

A good handful of the hardened regulars took their chance with the storm Caught at the back end of the latest storm 'AMY' it seemed highly unlikely anyone would turn up on the Sunday morning. So everyone else also thought the same too. A pleasant surprise for all when a good handful of the hardened regulars took their chance. Posted on 10 Oct 2025

Out comes the Dremel in the breaks A light wind forecast for Saturday and challenging day for the 4 entrants, with the far bank having most of the action. It seemed that the lunch break showed the most promising increase of wind. Posted on 6 Jul 2025
Vintage and Classic Marblehead racing at Fleetwood
Maybe the age of the skippers is catching up and sprinting is not the preferred option Normally we would have a fairly even split fleet from the two class of boats, sometimes favouring the Classic. This time we had a reversal with Vintage taking up the bulk. Maybe the age of the Skippers is catching up. Posted on 3 Jun 2025
Vane UK 36R Nationals at Fleetwood
22 skippers entered for the event, last hosted here in 1975 For those not too familiar with these: a small boat whereby the hull is of a restricted size and fits in a wooden box of 36 inches long by 11' x 8. The smallest vane yacht widely and regularly sailed at a few clubs around the UK. Posted on 2 Jun 2025
Topham Cup for 36R Vane boats at Fleetwood
Extra wind forced a few of the skippers into downsizing their rigs as the day went on We had eight Skippers for our first Vane sailing event of the year. Not too bad as the number seems to be increasing each year now and with a couple of the regulars away from a possible double digit number. for the small 36Rs. Posted on 17 Mar 2025
Flora Cup for Marblehead Vane boats at Fleetwood
The Vintage boats won the day With a roadside wind direction, the day was going to be somewhat challenging for a few. From the bridge end it was decided on 2 points out, but was this the right decision, as it looked like we had a run from both ends of the lake. Posted on 7 Oct 2024
RC Lasers at Fleetwood
With a race within a race for the Johnson family The wind was blowing from the clubhouse direction for the ten RC Laser entries. It looked to be a stock 'B' rig all-dayer, but with the light patch at the entry point, a bit of extra sail cloth helps you get through the lulls. Posted on 6 Oct 2024

Free sailing with Marblehead Vane model boats Initially we had 7 boats registered, but by the off, only 5 were dressed up ready to go. John Sharman was umming and arring to whether he could get Derek's loan boat together for the day, but finally succeeded. Posted on 22 Sep 2024
