Wind Wind Wind... I think it's fair to say that all anglers have been itching to get out on the water and with a final break in the weather last weekend that's what everyone did.
Saltwater
The Striped Trumpeter Season opened last Saturday with some great results for those who ventured out. Squid remain closed in the southern zone so a reminder if using squid bait during the squid closure period and zones you must be able to present a receipt for the bait.
Tuna - Big bluefin have been caught in bass strait the last few weeks with a few big models starting to get caught at Eaglehawk neck and Pedra. Making tuna a worthwhile target while heading out for some striped Trumpeter.
King flathead - have been fishing very well with anglers reporting some very nice sized fish in and around 120m of water out of Eaglehawk and Boomer Bay.
The estuaries have been a little slow with large amounts of freshwater and low temps slowing things a little.
There have been a few Australian Salmon about at the mouth of the Derwent, Marion Bay and south port with fish up to the 1kg mark getting caught with smaller models present further up the systems.
Bream have started to drop back into the estuaries with fish now starting to get caught actively feeding up on the flats.
In the north east St Helens has seen some good 50cm silver trevally and king George whiting.
Further down the east coast flathead have been fishing fairly well when weather conditions have allowed.
Freshwater
Trout have seen a good start to the season with high water levels present in most lakes and rivers at the moment.
The East coast Systems have been fishing well early season. Both fly and lure anglers have done well in Lake Leake, Tooms and Rostrevor lagoon.
Bronte has seen some better-quality fish of late around the inflows and flooded water margins especially early morning.
The Bradys system has seen good numbers of smaller rainbow and brown trout caught.
Penstock has had good signs of terrestrial life with stone fly's and the occasional gum beetle fall but water temps still remain a bit cold for duns. Anglers are reporting some days that it's possible to have multiple cracks at rising fish and other days stripping wets the only option.
Lake Echo has risen significantly over the last 4 months and the fishing has started to become very good, not easy though with anglers reporting small bite windows during the day when fish are very active.
Congratulations to our good customer Leo Oakly on his catch of a tagged trout. The first for the season. Let's hope we see a few more tagged trout caught.
The Great Lake Tie In was run a few weeks ago and reports of how fantastic the event was have come from customers and staff that attended the event.
