The race to Rio is officially on. Fourteen Asian nations are preparing to battle for continental glory in the SSL Gold Cup 2026 - the "Football World Cup in Sailing" - where the world's top national teams will meet to crown the best sailing nation on earth.
This December, Thailand will host the SSL Gold Cup Asia Qualifiers at Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Chonburi, marking a defining chapter on the global road to the final series in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The regatta will determine who advances, showcasing the strength, ambition, and growing presence of Asian nations in international sailing.
The teams bound for Brazil
Six teams from Asia have already secured their place in the SSL Gold Cup 2026 through the official SSL Nations Ranking, based on the performance of their top sailors. These high-performing nations have demonstrated consistency and strength across international sailing events and will advance directly to the final series in Rio.

These six nations will proudly represent Asia among the 40 finalists in Brazil, where each will compete for the title of World Champion of Nations. Their automatic qualification reflects Asia's rising standard of competitive sailing and the increasing professionalism across the region's teams.
Eight teams, two spots - the continental qualifiers
For the remaining Asian contenders, the course to Rio runs through Thailand. Eight national teams will line up for the Asia Continental Qualifiers, split into two groups - each group winner earning one of the final two Asian tickets to the SSL Gold Cup 2026.

For Oman, this qualification regatta represents a chance to showcase national progress and passion on the global stage.

"Our main goal is not just to qualify but to represent Oman with pride, and showcase the progress our sailing program has made. This qualification is a huge opportunity for us - it puts Oman on the map in a global sailing event and opens doors for future generations."
For the United Arab Emirates, competing in Thailand will be a defining moment for its young, homegrown team.
"Our team has been preparing with great focus, combining intensive training on the water with a strong commitment to teamwork and strategy. For us, this qualification is more than just a competition. It is a source of national pride and inspiration for the next generation." said Adil Khalid, team captain for SSL Team UAE. "Competing in the SEA Games and the SSL Gold Cup qualification in Thailand is a milestone for us, as it represents a chance to bring the UAE into the global spotlight of sailing."
The races will be sailed on identical SSL47 yachts - high-performance one-design boats that ensure pure, tactical racing where skill and teamwork decide the outcome. This format guarantees a level playing field, bringing out the very best in every crew.
Team Oman expect tough competition in the qualifier event, especially from nations with long-standing sailing traditions, but believe in their teamwork, preparation, and the passion they bring to the water. Meanwhile, Team UAE see the event as an opportunity to measure themselves against some of the world's finest sailors, expecting challenging conditions and tough opponents.

How the Road to Rio works
The SSL Gold Cup 2026 will feature 66 nations competing for the title of World Champion of Nations. The format mirrors football's World Cup structure, with a qualifying phase followed by a final series in Rio de Janeiro.
Each continent is guaranteed representation in the final series to ensure a truly global event. From Asia, six teams qualify directly via the SSL Nations Ranking, while two more will secure their places through the Continental Qualifiers this December in Thailand.
In total, eight Asian teams will line up in Brazil in 2026, which is a record representation for the continent. The host nation, Brazil, qualifies automatically.
The upcoming Asia Qualifiers in Thailand will not only decide which nations advance but also contribute valuable 500 SSL Ranking points, making every race critical in shaping the global leaderboard.
A landmark event for Asian sailing
Organized in collaboration with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the SSL Gold Cup Asia Qualifiers will run from 20-22 December 2025 at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, Chonburi. The event will be the first of its kind in Asia, setting a new benchmark for high-performance, nation-versus-nation sailing in the region.
It marks a major step in SSL's mission to make sailing more accessible, inclusive, and engaging - bringing together elite sailors, emerging nations, and passionate fans across continents.
