NorthStar holds onto 6th place overall on the Rolex SailGP Championship leaderboard

The 10th event of the Rolex SailGP Championship took place this weekend in Geneva, the only freshwater venue of the season. The 12 national teams, lined up in front of a sold-out crowd on the shores of Lake Leman when racing got under way yesterday afternoon.

Light winds meant that only three fleet races could take place on day one and it was Australia who were the most consistent, wrapping up the day in first overall. Emirates GBR SailGP Team were closed behind in second and the home team, Switzerland were in third with 18 points, followed by NorthStar just one point behind in fourth.

"The whole fleet was super inconsistent today, everyone was struggling, and we certainly followed that trend. With such light wind, you could just about get foiling if you got clear air off the line," said Driver Giles Scott after the first day of racing. "Plenty of work to do tomorrow. We are well within a shot, which is what matters."

With two fleet races and the final scheduled for today, the teams were optimistic that the cloud activity would bring a bit of breeze before the much-anticipated storm arrived later in the afternoon. The F50s were equipped with the light air T-foils, high speed rudders and 24M wings, with just three crew onboard. Starts were critical as always and both races were shortened to four legs. The Canadians finished 11th and 6th, to place 9th overall in the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix, while Germany went on to win their first event ever, followed by Australia in second and Switzerland in third.

A highlight of the weekend for the Canadian team was winning Focus Area 3 of the SailGP Impact League, moving NorthStar to the top of the leaderboard for the planet. Tackling Climate Action, the team partnered with the Community Eelgrass Restoration Initiative (CERI) at Dalhousie University in Halifax and planted over 2,000 eelgrass shoots together with local youth, notably the largest ever eelgrass planting in Atlantic Canada.

"The SailGP Impact League allows us to look for different projects and ways to have a positive effect on our sport. It also really does mean we are getting out in the community and doing some hard work to make the world a better place in the future," said NorthStar SailGP Team athlete, Tim Hornsby.

NorthStar holds onto 6th place overall on the Rolex SailGP Championship leaderboard as the fleet heads to Cadiz, Spain for the penultimate event of the season on 4-5 October, before the Grand Final in Abu Dhabi on 29-30 November.
