Trelly's Weekly Fishing Report © Trellys
The Victorian trout season is under way and many keen anglers have been out chasing trout already, myself included.
Most people are quite cautious about giving away their trout fishing spots and that is fully understandable due to the fact that trout are no longer stocked into streams.
Overall the general consensus is that this trout season has started better for many people than last season did.
I have had photos sent to me and seen plenty of photos online of trout caught around the region.
I fished in the headwaters of the Ovens River catchment on opening morning and managed to catch just 3 trout for the entire morning.
I did see quite a few more however.
All the fish were quite small, but it was great to see a few around.
The Strike Tiger Nymph in "Trout Roe" and the Strike Tiger Minco Minnow in "Black And Gold" were the colours that the trout were going after the most for me.
Fingers crossed we get a better season this season than we did last season.
The key ingredient is rain, the more of it we can get the better at the moment.
Lake Eildon
The steady stream of big cod photos seem to be making their way onto social media again this week of big Murray cod being caught in Lake Eildon.
Most have been caught by anglers finding fish with their livescope fish finders and casting lures directly at the fish.
I have not had any reports of Yellowbelly being caught at Lake Eildon this week, but I am sure reports won't be far away.
Lake Nillahcootie
I saw a photo of a pair of nice Yellowbelly caught at Lake Nillahcootie this week, both fish were around the 30 to 35cm size. They were not huge fish, but it was a nice pair of Yellowbelly and a good sign of things to come.
Lake Neangar
Lake Neangar in Bendigo continues to produce nice sized yellowbelly on bait and lures. I am seeing quite a few photos of Yellowbelly being caught there, some of which appear to be up around the 40cm mark.
Broken Creek
Last week my friend Sonny and I fished Broken Creek near Katamatite where we managed to catch quite a few carp. I even caught a yabby on my fishing rod.
What really stood out to me was the improvement in the fishing. I have made a few trips over the recently and caught 1 or 3 carp, but this time around there was not just a lot more bites, but they were more aggressive.
It was a clear sign that the fishing in Broken Creek is moving to a more spring type pattern, which is a sign that everywhere else will soon too.
We were targeting Yellowbelly but did not catch any. All of our carp were caught on Jan Juc Worms.
Goulburn River
I have not seen or heard any fishing reports from the lower Goulburn River around Shepparton, but have had mixed reports of the trout fishing up around the Thornton and Alexandra areas.
When I shared a photo of my first trout of the season to my Facebook page on Saturday, a number of people told me that they had fished the Goulburn without any success.
A few other people told me that they did well on the Goulburn River.
Michael Lane shared a video on his YouTube channel (Michael Lane Fishing) of his trout opening trip on the Goulburn River. He and a mate drifted downstream in their kayaks casting lures and caught a couple of absolutely enormous brown trout.
They had to work hard for their fish in stunning conditions but were well rewarded.
One thing that I noticed on Michaels video was the amount of people on the banks fishing the Goulburn on opening day. This could have something to do with the poor trout fishing experienced by some anglers.
Perhaps re-visiting during a quieter time of the week might be a bit more productive.
