Fairlie Yacht Club stalwart honoured with surprise award presented by pro sailor son

by RYA Scotland 10 Sep 06:39 UTC

Long-serving Fairlie Yacht Club volunteer Pete Wright was left speechless during the 2025 Largs Regatta Festival when honoured with an RYA Scotland Impact Award in a surprise presentation led by Fairlie Sailing Club Commodore Calum McPhee - assisted by Pete's son, professional sailor Ruaridh Wright who's presence was an additional and emotional surprise.

The award was presented during the prize-giving ceremony for the Festival's popular 'Cumbraes Weekend' - an event for which Pete has served as Race Officer for decades. His tireless voluntary service to both the regatta and Fairlie Yacht Club's wider race programme has earned him admiration across the Scottish sailing community.

Pete's calm leadership, deep expertise, and unwavering commitment to the sport were formally recognised by RYA Scotland - the national governing body for sailing and boating - through this Impact Award, following community nominations.

Adding a deeply personal touch to the occasion was the unexpected arrival of Ruaridh, who now lives and sails professionally on the south coast of England. Having learned to sail locally with his dad, Ruaridh's presence was kept secret until the moment of the award, making the emotional tribute even more poignant.

Standing tall at around 6 foot 7, Ruaridh wasn't easy to hide - but thanks to a well-planned secret entrance within Largs Sailing Club, he was able to appear at just the right moment, walking straight into the heart of the prize-giving to join the presentation.

Speaking after the award, Pete said:

"I had no idea - absolutely no idea. I don't look for praise... I'm absolutely blown away, and Ruaridh coming to join us today is unbelievable. I'm blown away"

Pleased to see his Dad recognised for decades of hard work, Ruaridh said:

"You can't race without a race officer, not without the support from them, the mark layers - everyone.

"I think for the sport it's important to have people like Dad because they're willing to give up their time and energy to make things happen. It's a really special thing to observe."

Pete's contributions have shaped countless regattas and inspired generations of sailors. Described by fellow sailors as "a friend to everyone in the fleet," he is known for his determination to deliver the best possible racing experience, no matter the conditions. His skill and dedication as a Race Officer have made him a sought-after figure at events across the Clyde - often jumping from one regatta to the next without pause.

The Impact Award is a fitting tribute to a man whose influence and steadfast service are leaving a lasting mark on Scottish sailing.
