Yare & Bure Open Weekend at Horning Sailing Club

by Clive Gardner 6 Sep 06:47 UTC 30-31 August 2025

White Boat Weekend was a family win

The Yare and Bure weekend on the broad was a lively affair with a good breeze and with some challenging changes in wind direction keeping all the sailors on their toes. You might think that it was enough to compete without taking your two young children with you. So it was that Richie and Flip Dugdale together with Alfie and Henry aged one and three respectively sailed all five races to secure first place overall for the weekend. No mean feat!

Saturday afternoon saw eight boats on the start line including additional visitors Simon Daniels from Barton in Silver Blue and Martin Thompson from Wroxham in Dingy Skipper. The two races on Saturday were won by the Dugdale family briskly followed by Martin Thompson who was in each case close behind. Post racing and back at the clubhouse Pimms and nibbles were available giving the visitors and HSC sailors the opportunity to renew old acquaintances.

On Sunday there was again a brisk breeze with some challenging gusts and changes of wind direction. In the first race the Dugdale family slipped to second with Martin Thompson securing first position followed by Simon Daniels in third and Ron Jackson in Holly Blue in fourth. In the second race normal service was resumed with the Dugdale family first with Martin Thompson second and Simon Daniels third. However in the last race of the day Martin Thompson came in first, The Dugdale family second, and Ron Jackson third.

After that it was back to the clubhouse for tea and some very tasty homemade cakes donated by HSC members.

Special thanks go to the Galley staff, the cake makers and food providers and in particular Stuart Bailey and his crew who ran the line in an exemplary manner.
