Trelly's Weekly Fishing Report - September 5, 2025

Trelly's Weekly Fishing Report © Trellys

As I sit here typing this report, Murray cod season is now closed, Murray crayfishing season has closed and trout season remains closed until this Saturday.

Thankfully we still have Yellowbelly and Yabbies to try and catch!

Murray cod season may have closed, but it is not closed everywhere. During the spring months all of the rivers and creeks in Northern Victoria are closed to Murray cod fishing, but a select few lakes remain open.

Over the next few months, you are allowed to target Murray cod in Lake Eildon, Lake Eppalock, Lake Nillahcootie and Cairn Curran Reservoir.

Also, the fish out pond at the Arcadia Fish Hatchery remains open to Murray cod fishing in the closed season.

In the Wimmera region you can catch Murray cod anywhere in the spring time except the Wimmera River.

All of this information is available for free at vfa.vic.gov.au.

This week I decided to put some yabby nets in a dam near Wangaratta. I know it is early and I was not expecting to catch very much.

To my surprise I caught 35 yabbies and managed to have a magnificent early season feed of the nicest shellfish on the planet.

There is no closed season on yabbies, but they do go off the bite during winter. I suspect that many places will still be really slow, but as I discovered, some places are starting to fire early so it might be worth putting some yabby nets into your favourite dam or creek.

Lake Eildon

I have not been back over there myself, but have had reports of small redfin and big carp being caught from the bank at sunset. There is no shortage of photos and videos online of very large Murray cod being caught over there at the moment.

As the weather continues to warm up, no doubt Yellowbelly catches will start to pick up.

Lake Nillahcootie

Reports are still scarce, but I have had 2 reports. One was of a number of carp being caught near the boat ramp, and the other was a photo of a nice chunky Yellowbelly caught off the bank at the Sandy Creek access point. Hopefully that is a sign of things to come.

Lake Neangar

This small lake in Bendigo has been producing a few Silver Perch and the odd Yellowbelly. I have never fished this lake but it seems to be a real hotspot. I often get sent photos of fish caught there. I know that the Victorian Fisheries Authority stock it quite heavily.

Lake William Hovell

The fishing at Lake William Hovell is dead, dead and dead. I fished it from my boat for a few hours during the week and did not get a single touch.

This is a fishing report. It may not be what you want to read, but it is a report, a bad report.

Lake Eppalock

Redfin continue to be caught at Lake Eppalock by anglers in boats. Eppalock has been a real stand out this winter.

Trout season opens this Saturday and many keen anglers (including me) will be out and about in search of their first stream trout of the season.

We all have our fingers crossed for a better trout season this year than last year which was horrible.

Hopefully I will be in a position to report more on the trout fishing in next weeks report.

Good luck to everyone going fishing this weekend.
