5.5 Metre Austrian Open 2025 at Union Yacht Club Traunsee - Day 2

by 5.5 Metre Class Association 23 Aug 23:21 UTC 22-24 August, 2025

The second day of the 5.5 Metre Austrian Open, incorporating the Salzkammergutpreis, on the Traunsee, at Gmunden, again brought challenging wind conditions, but two races were eventually completed, both going to No Stress (GER 124, Jorg Sonntag, Margit Deinzer, Oliver Weiss).

The opening race started in a nice breeze with No Stress pulling through from a slow start to round the top mark ahead and lead all the way for the win. Arcano (AUT 24, Dirk Harms, Eugen Kossina, Paul Christian Laherstorfer) followed round in second with Wasa V (AUT 66, Stephan Holzinger, Michael Bernhard Fischer, Peter Farbowski) in third.

A second race was attempted but abandoned before the start when the wind shut off. The course was moved as some new breeze arrived but that also shut off and the fleet was sent ashore to wait. Some crews were mid-way through beer and schnitzel when the call came to go afloat again, with the wind almost back where it started from, though much more shifty.

No Stress was leading half-way up the first beat when it started to go really funky. Wasa V came through to lead round from No Stress and Aurelia (AUT 5, Martin Burger, Jurgen Lappi, Georg Praxmarer). The first downwind was tortuous with Wasa V holding the lead at the bottom and No Stress dropping to fourth. Wasa V held the lead until half-way down the final run when the breeze died on the right and came in on the left and No Stress sailed round the group to take another win with Arcano second and Wasa V third again. Arcano holds the lead in the yardstick ranked Salzkammergutpreis.

Racing concludes on Sunday with a start scheduled for 12.00.
