The Boating Industry Association launched the National Recreational Boating Statement at the new-format Sydney Boat Show, Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park, to an audience of government, stakeholder and industry representatives.

BIA CEO Andrew Fielding said the report found boating participation was set to reach more than 6 million by 2030, when there would be 1 million registered boats and Australians were projected to spend $20 billion on getting out on the water in all forms of vessels and watercraft.

"Australia is a lucky country, with some of the best conditions for boating in the world," Fielding said.

"We also have an industry making some of the best boats and marine products. The industry however has a huge demand when it comes to jobs and skills, with 93 per cent of the industry concerned about availability of skilled labour.

"The report proves boating is one of the major outdoor leisure activities in this country with millions of people participating in a huge range of craft both registered and those not needing to be registered such as small paddle and sailing craft."

The report highlights the most significant and popular way for Australians to get out on the water is the family runabout of up to 7m in length. The fastest growth in boating type is personal watercraft where registrations have grown by 28 per cent over the past five years.

Boating was found to be highly valued by the public for its social benefit from being on, in or by the water due to its proven mental and physical health advantages, and fishing was the most popular activity.

The Statement includes a number of priorities for government, stakeholders and industry to seize upon opportunities to meet public demand and support the substantial social, and economic benefits of boating in all its forms.
