Trelly's Weekly Fishing Report - August 06, 2025 © Trellys

As much as I would love to say, the fishing has been amazing... it hasn't. It's been slow in most areas. BUT... with spring around the corner that should all change pretty soon.

Goulburn River

From all accounts, water levels have been up and down like a yoyo in the Goulburn River. Fishing reports have been just as inconsistent.

I know that there were a few cod being caught before the recent environmental flow, but I have not heard any reports since.

Waranga Basin

The Waranga Basin continues to rise quite slowly and flood new ground. It is currently sitting just under 60%. I have seen photos of both carp and redfin caught there this week. The carp were big, but the redfin were tiny. Hopefully some spring sunshine soon might help improve the fishing at Waranga basin.

Broken River

I fished the Broken River with worms last week. I fished for a couple of hours landing just 2 carp. I was fishing near Benalla. I have seen photos of Murray cod caught further downstream this last week. Not many, but a few, one was over 70cm.

Lake Nillahcootie

I fished Lake Nillahcootie one afternoon last week. I sat on the bank for close to 4 hours angling with worms, managing to catch only one carp. It was very quiet.

Ovens River

The Ovens River has been fishing about as poorly as it gets. Being in my home town I have fished it several times with bait recently and have not caught a single fish. I have however caught a few crayfish on my fishing rods. I have caught them on both cheese and worms.

Family Friendly Waterways

Many of Victoria's family friendly waterways were stocked just prior to the recent school holidays and they have been very popular.

Despite the school holidays being over, they are all still worth fishing.

I know of two of these waterways that have continued fishing well after the holidays, these being Lake Sambell in Beechworth and Allans Flat Waterhole near Yackandandah.

A full list of stocked family friendly waterways can be found on the VFA website at vfa.vic.gov.au.
