Border Counties Midweek Sailing Series at Bala Sailing Club

by Dave Thomas 17 Jul 21:22 UTC 15 July 2025

Llyn Tegid saw the Border Counties Midweek Sailing Tuesday club return for another great day of sailing on this large lake winds were predicted and they didn't disappoint with a good breeze throughout the day. 24 boats of varying classes took to the water including four double handed Miracles.

Race 1

The day got off to a good start with Andy our OOD telling us we were starting on time at 11.00,amazingly we were bang on and with no recalls we looked into the distance and headed for the windward mark, the faster home boats were there first with their boats clearly better suited to this type of lake.

Lunch was then enjoyed in the glorious sunshine and fantastic views of the beautiful Welsh countryside and mountains where our OOD then informed us the next race would be at 1.00 prompt.

Race 2

Wind was still good as we all headed off again for a nice clean start with some boats going for a port end dash our OOD watching from the tower commented that it was impressive to see about 10 boats all tack from their port tack back to starboard and then back to port almost in unison and off we all went with the locals showing us the way rather impressively the miracle of Simon and Julie Dolman finished in 3rd place. We were also treated to a fly by from the RAF.

Race 3

Again started nice and cleanly on time, still the winds stayed with us as we all headed off for the last race of the day and won by eventual overall winner Dan Partington in his K1.

The day was rounded off with a prize-giving presented by our OOD Andy. Rather unusually we saw the first 3 boats all from the same club Bala SC and only 0.5 point between 2nd and 5th seeing series leader Pete knocked back to 4th.

Next event which is a new venue for us is at Port Dinorwic (full details on our website) Tuesday July 29th. So why not come and join our friendly Tuesday club - it's better than being in work!
