Rudyard Lake Sailing Club once again played host to a joint Phantom and ILCA open meeting on the 28th of June.
Five Phantoms returned, buoyed by fond memories of last year's long beats and endless reaches. This time, however, we were treated to a westerly - an unwelcome wind that typically transforms Rudyard into a mind-numbing game of snakes and ladders. And true to form, Rudyard delivered!
As a result, numbers were down on the day, with some competitors opting for gardening over gusts.
The racing did not disappoint.
The first race went to Adam Froggatt, despite him capsizing no fewer than five times. The second race saw victory for Andy Pyett, while both Adam and John Harrison were called OCS and pulled off the course. In the third and final race, Adam returned to the front, with John enjoying his second OCS of the day.
The prevailing theme was a wildly shifty, often fitful breeze, place changes on every leg, and some bruising gusts in the final race. By the end, sailors were both mentally and physically wiped out.
Overall Results:
1st - Adam Froggatt
2nd - Andy Pyett
3rd - Jim Hopton
4th - Matt Gardiner
5th - John Harrison
This meeting also marked the final event of the Midlands Area Travellers Trophy, where Adam repeated his victory from last year - congratulations!
We now look forward to the next open meeting at Hollingworth on the 6th of July.
