The Isle of Wight together with stunning weather provided the perfect backdrop for a four day Summer Solstice event held at Stokes Bay Sailing Club in Gosport.

A welcome return to the bay for the Unicorns after five years attracted some competitive newcomers to the fleet, with former Dart catamaran sailor Steve Morgan getting off to a flying start for his first time competing in the Mazzotti Trophy series.

Favouring the force 2-3 conditions on an upwind - downwind course, Steve dealt some punishing blows to the regular Unicorn front runners by winning the first three races and maintained an overall lead beyond the midway point of the regatta.

By race four on the Friday afternoon, the breeze had increased to fresh conditions which allowed current holder, Dan Jarman, to find another gear and start his comeback, together with Gary Piper making some solid performances to climb back up the results table.

The following three races, sailed in moderate Easterly conditions, saw Steve defending close tactical challenges from the chasing pack which included life-long cat experts Andy McQueen, Paul Chatfield and Will Rayden together with the youngest addition to the fleet, Harvey Jarman, a third generation family Unicorn sailor making his debut.

But it was the second half of the regatta that suited Jarman senior, who went on to gain a number of first places in the heavier breezes to secure his defence of the cup, hotly perused by Gary Piper who did well to finish second overall in front of Steve Morgan in third place.
