Latest look at Kayakers' Reef

Kayaker's Reef is a small-scale shellfish reef that was installed around 800m south-west of Kerferd Road Pier, Albert Park, in late 2024.

A driving force behind the reef, Bob Pearce from Albert Park Yachting and Angling Club (APYAC) has shared an update about the Kayakers Reef and less than five months after installation, he said the development is staggering.

The baby oysters were about the size of a 20 cent piece when placed in situ (on oyster triangles) and have grown amazingly. There has also been recruitment, with baby oysters now growing naturally on the fish towers.

It is amazing what can be achieved from working positively with mother nature. Every shellfish reef project that has been completed has exceeded expectations and Kayakers is no exception

So, Kayakers' 1.0 is now complete and the fish towers for Kayakers' 2.0 were outplaced last week. We are hoping for a similar outcome for Kayakers' 2.0 also and will look forward to getting Kayakers' 3.0 happening.

There was virtually no life in the area when the initial surveys were carried out, but the marine biodiversity has increased dramatically and fish are now being caught in the area.

There will be another Victorian Fisheries Authority survey carried out on Kayakers' 1.0 in the not too distant future.
