Port Phillip Heads (the RIP)

The RIP continues to be the current fishing hotspot this week with solid and consistent reports rolling through. Anglers fishing the start and end of the tides are proving to be the best time of the day to target the kings and find success.

Fish have been ranging from about mid-80s to 110cm in length. Live baits have been working very well but unfortunately the seals have been a massive problem in getting baits down, knife jigs have been a great alternative and been super effective. 200 to 300 gram jigs have been lethal and colours really haven't mattered too much. Anglers seeking live bait have been finding slimeys and yakkas around the mussel farm at Mud Island and Calamari in the usual hot spots in that region such as Swan Bay, The Grass beds and mud island.

Corio Bay

Back inside the bay and the varierty of species that hold this time of year in the outer harbour are still chewing reasonably well. King George Whiting, Snapper, Flathead, Salmon and Pike have all been in good numbers with the spoil grounds proving to be the standout locations. This time of the year is a great time to go back with the snapper spread and have a crack purely for snapper as we do tend to get a great late season run this time of year. The southern part of the channel would have to be the better part of the bay to have a go at this.

Offshore

Offshore Barwon heads has been pretty hit and miss with the Tuna action lately, there does seem to be a good number of fish out there however they have been rather tricky to tempt into a bite. The 50 metre line has been where majority seem to be hanging and down 25 metres in the water column. Deep diving lures or skirted lures with the aid of a teaser is ideal to either get down deeper and create more splash on the surface to get the attention of the tuna.

Stoney Creek Res

Stoney Creek Reservoir has been fishing quite well this past week for anglers having a crack at the resident Redfin. Soft plastics and spoon style lures have been working best, anglers have been doing best with 3 inch paddle tail plastics with the aid of a jig spinner and plenty of scent.

Goulburn River

The Goulburn has been sitting and steady level for the past couple of weeks now.

This is meant The Fishing has been at its best with plenty of Cod and yellow belly reported daily. There's been a couple hotspots over the past week with Murchison being a great area for those bait fishing using bardi grubs, worms and cheese with cod up to 75 cm reported over the past week amongst plenty of smaller fish. In the heart of Shepparton, there's been some promising reports of yellow belly being caught on small Bassman spinnerbaits and TN 60 Jackals.Downstream towards Lock Gary, there's been cod, caught by those trolling old mate hardbodies and also plenty of small cod caught on chicken, cheese and worms with some legal size cod amongst those captors. Upstream towards Nagambie, we're getting heaps of reports that the Fishing is going great big cod up to a metre as well as big yellow belly up to 50 cms. There has been plenty of active legal sized fish being caught amongst the bigger fish so you should be able to get good numbers of fish in a session.

Broken River

Broken is very low at the moment in Shepparton, which had congregated the fish into deeper holes. Plenty of locals have been targeting these fish by the banks and by kayak, with no one method standing out. Casting spinner baits, hardbodies and soft vibes has been a very popular way of chasing Both cod yellow belly in the broken.Shrimp, worms, and cheese seems to be the best bait for cod with yellowbelly taking a liking to small yabby's and shrimp. Like always the surface bite has been great in the broken with plenty of cod being caught nightly from Shepparton all the way to Benalla with the best surface lures being Pompadour's, Aussie crawlers and soft frogs.

Kialla Lakes

Fishing at Kialla during the day has been extremely tough with the heat in the day shutting down the bite. The mornings and late afternoons have been good with plenty of redfin and yellow belly caught, predominantly in lake number one.Small soft, plastics, blades and spinner baits have worked for yellowbelly with redfin eating jerk and baits minnows.Bait fishing around the trees or shaded banks in the evenings has been great with small yabby's and scrub worms being the stand out baits. There's been plenty of Yellowbelly caught on bait in the evenings at kialla.

Lake Hume

It's been big yellowbelly time at Lake Hume with a heap of locals heading north to chase yellowbelly in the lake. Most fish seem to be holding on timber with many using live sonar to find these fish and then sending down black gulps, blades or swim jigs. You sometimes have to spend a bit of time finding active trees but when you do you can pull four or five good fish off each tree. There's also been yellow belly, caught in the trees on worms and shrimp by lightly weighting and drifting them down to these big fish. If you're not confident in Fishing the trees there's been some nice fish caught off points on soft plastics with the slow roll technique being the best.
