The 2025 Festival of Sails will open with a truly historic spectacle, as the iconic tall ship STS Young Endeavour is announced as the official start boat for the 182nd Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race. This marks an exciting moment for both sailing enthusiasts and the local community, as one of the oldest sporting events in Australia will witness the grandeur of a tall ship leading the charge to signal the start of the prestigious race.

The STS Young Endeavour, with its towering masts and sails stretched high against the sky, will play a central role in this year's Festival of Sails. As it leads the fleet, a deep cannon will echo across Port Phillip Bay, marking the start of the race that brings together over 300 yachts from across the region and beyond. The cannon fire will signal the commencement of the Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race, adding to the dramatic and exhilarating moment that has been a cherished part of the event's rich history.

"We are excited to have the STS Young Endeavour take on such a pivotal role at the 2025 Festival of Sails," said Phil Francis, Chairman of Festival of Sails 2025. "This historic moment, with a tall ship leading the charge, truly highlights the Festival's legacy and the significance of the Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race. It will be a spectacular sight and an exhilarating start to the event."

After the race begins, the STS Young Endeavour will accompany the fleet as it makes its way to Geelong, where it will be docked at Wangim Walk for the weekend. Festival attendees will have the unique opportunity to explore this extraordinary vessel, gaining insight into its impressive history and maritime heritage.

In addition to the Tall Ship's involvement, key VIPs including government officials, media representatives, and Festival of Sails regatta officials, will board the Young Endeavour for this remarkable journey, including Steve Aulich, the Principal Race Officer for the event.

"Being part of this historic moment on the STS Young Endeavour is an incredible experience," said Aulich. "It's not every day you get to witness the start of the Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race from aboard such a magnificent vessel, and I'm looking forward to sharing this moment with all those on board."

The Festival of Sails 2025 promises to be the biggest and best yet, with an expanded racing series, world-class sailing action, and a vibrant lineup of entertainment. This year's event will run from January 25-27, offering plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy, from music and food to sailing and family-friendly fun.
