2024 RSHYR: Rolex Sydney Hobart passion undergoing boost at Southport Yacht Club

by Steve Dettre/RSHYR media 25 Dec 2024 04:23 UTC 26 December 2024

Co-Passion for the 2024 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race at the Southport Yacht Club (SYC) extends right through the Club, with the commodore and receptionist taking to the water.

Club Commodore, Glenn Burrell, is crewing in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's race this year, as is club receptionist Jess Greenwood, among a burgeoning list of crew and owners from the Gold Coast club.

"For the first time, we have Commodore Glenn and Vice Commodore of Sail, Wayne Kirby, in the race. Glenn is on Ocean Crusaders J-Bird and Wayne on Denali," said Southport Yacht Club General Manager Brett James.

"I don't think that's ever happened before.

"The word is that there's a side bet between Glenn and Wayne over their finishing position - so we'll see how it ends up."

James said there was a total of 11 of their sailors on boats in the fleet, with four boats from the SYC entered.

Others representing SYC are Phoebe Reedman, Laura Thomson, Casper White, Saskia Groen-In't-Woud, Matt Parkin, Braedon McHugh, Renee Cohen, Bill Barry-Cotter, and Michael Spies.

Boats are Maritimo 100, Maritimo Katwinchar, Celeste, Silver Fern and Awen.

"It's a testament to the work being done by Glenn to boost the participation in the Club," James said.

"He has really developed the flee, and the desire to take part in the Sydney Hobart is intense."

Southport Yacht is the finishing partner of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's Noakes Sydney to Gold Coast Yacht Race.
