22 Cape 31s from 12 nations descend on Sanremo, Italy for the Europeans

The picturesque Italian Riviera city of Sanremo is ready to host the highly anticipated Cape 31 European Championship from November 7th to 10th.

The second Cape 31 European Championship event will bring together an impressive fleet of 22 Cape 31 teams from across Europe and beyond, all vying for glory in one of the most competitive and fun sailing classes in the world right now. The stunning waters of Sanremo, renowned for their challenging conditions and scenic backdrop, will provide the perfect stage for this high-octane competition.

Mark Mills, Cape 31 designer said, "The first Cape 31 Europeans in the MED marks a new high point for the Class, and will be a great opportunity for me to meet a new group of owners from different countries at the season finale. It is the culmination of alot of work by the Class, owners and crews, and 31 North to build an amazing Class that is growing fast worldwide. I can't wait!"

Entry List Highlights

The Cape 31 European Championship will see fierce rivalries from across the UK and Med fleets join together for some top-tier racing talent. Entries include:

  • Give Me Five (FRA 3105) - Skippered by Adrien/Robin Follin from France, a team that have won multiple Med class events this season as well as topping several IRC fleets.
  • Shotgunn (IOM 31) - 2023 UK Season Champions and 2024 European Season Champions have serious form and will be vying for a top spot.
  • Terrible Joy (GBR 311X) - Led by Loic Pompee, representing Monaco, joins the fleet for a second time chartering Squirt to join in the fun... will we see him in his own boat next season.
  • La Pericolosa (GER 3156) - Local favorite Christian Schwoerer heads back to the Med after putting in some great performances in large UK fleets over the last 2 seasons.
  • Black Star (SUI 27) - Christian Zuerrer and team Black Star from Switzerland are looking forward their baptism of fire in their new boat..
  • Stig (ITA 3176) - Alessandro Rombelli brings an ambitious spirit with this Italian team, aiming for top honors.
  • The Bodfather (GBR 3116X) - Charlie Whelan, Corinthian/1 pro 2024 National Champion in the UK is looking forward to lining up against some new teams.
  • Motions (NED 3138) Lennard van Oeveren and team won the final event of the MED series in Sanremo overall being the first Corinthian/1 pro team to 'do the double'.

The full line up includes 22 teams from 12 nations;

Hurakan (Marco Serafini, Italy), Adrenaline (Darren Wright, Ireland), The Bodfather (Charlie Whelan, Great Britain), Katabatic (Lance Adams, Great Britain), Eker Süzme (Ahmet Eker, Turkey), Bellini Racing Team (Stefan Scherf), Akheilos (Ben Pritchard, Great Britain), Aspire (Przemyslaw Gacek and Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Poland), Essentia (Catalin Trandafir, Romania), Solano (Pascal Feryn, France), Black Seal (Richard Thomson, Great Britain), Black Battalion (Hungary), Stella Maris (August Schram, Austria), halbtrocken 3.1 (Michael Berghorn, Germany), MeerBlick (Gaby Pohlmann, Germany).

Onshore Program

Sanremo will not only host thrilling sailing but will also offer a range of social activities, allowing participants and attendees to experience the vibrant local culture and network within the sailing community.

  • Wednesday: The event will kick off with a Welcome Cocktail at Yacht Club Sanremo following measurement.
  • Thursday: A formal Gala Dinner will provide elegance and camaraderie at Victory Morgana Restaurant. Thursday will also see the awarding of the 2024 European Season Trophy.
  • Friday: A casual Pasta Party followed by a Aimasso Wine Tasting will celebrate Italian cuisine and regional wines, capped by an exclusive Owner Dinner hosted by August Schram, Stella Maris.
  • Saturday: Another Pasta Party will give sailors a hearty meal before the final races.
  • Sunday: The Championship will conclude with an exciting Prize-Giving Ceremony, recognizing the exceptional performances of the week.
