Gusts up to 30 welcomed competitors to an always eventful Oakcliff Halloween Invitational. The Northerly became lighter and shiftier throughout day two. The competitors were equal Canadian and American with the Canadians coming out on top. Peter Wickwire currently ranked 10 in the world, bested countryman Alec Coleman in the finals, which went down to the 5th and sudden death race. Alex Heinzmann finished 3rd.
Wickwire has traveled the 13 hours south from Nova Scotia for every Oakcliff Match Racing Regatta ranked Grade 3 and above for the whole 2024 season, winning 3 and coming 2nd in two. Just after winning he commented to his crew "well this will make the drive home a little easier."
All of Oyster Bay was alive this last weekend of October, with 35 Optis racing the New York State Championships at The Waterfront Centre in West Harbor, Stirling Harbor Foundation ran Shields racing mid-harbor, using Oakcliff boats and sailing in front of Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. That left the 3-mile long Cold Spring Harbor for the Oakcliff Halloween Regatta. Strong winds on Saturday piled rollers straight up the chute, and the volunteer Umpires, Race Committee and Mark Boat Operators looked more like they were on a USCG rescue mission than supporting a match racing regatta. Day two, was much more 'civilized' allowing for the second round robin to be finished and a finals, petit finals and consolation round to be sailed. Live coverage was posted throughout the event on socials Facebook and Instagram @OakcliffSail
Looking to the winter, Oakcliff will be traveling the country on a Collab Tour sharing lessons learned over the past 15 years by the multiple Foundations and clubs in Oyster Bay which have worked together to fill Oyster Bay's harbors with complementary racing and programming. Collective learning is key, and when the tour will inevitably discover something cool in Annapolis, they will then share it in Pensacola.
