RS Aero European Team Race Youth Championships preview

by Elena Giolai 24 Oct 10:35 UTC 25-27 October 2024

Società Canottieri Ichnusa and Lega Navale del Sulcis the FIV clubs organising the continental team event.

From 25 to 27 October, 12 teams representing 9 nations will compete on the picturesque race course in front of Su Siccu, in Cagliari, for the RS Aero European Youth Team Racing.

After the success of the two previous editions, the Italian Sailing Federation and the Italian RS Aero Class, in collaboration with the International Class, have once again entrusted the event to the Società Canottieri Ichnusa and the Lega Navale del Sulcis, who will organise the event with the professionalism and hospitality already demonstrated on several occasions. The event, with each team consisting of a boy and a girl, also aims to create a cultural and social exchange between participants. There will be under-25 male and female sailors from Ireland, Germany, Ukraine, Estonia, Great Britain, Belgium, Lithuania - winner of the last edition - and, of course, Italy, for three days of sport, friendship, and sharing.

The basin in front of the 'Su Siccu-Molo Ichnusa 'waterfront offers an ideal location for team regattas, sheltered and with great viewing opportunities for spectators, who can follow the races while strolling or sitting comfortably on benches. The races will be held on the RS Aero single dinghy with sail 5 (the smallest in the class), to ensure that everyone can race even in strong winds. Team regattas are based on precise sailing, manoeuvres, tactics and good handling of the rules, rather than pure speed: a 'game' that youngsters are very passionate about.

The event, which on Thursday 24 October will see the arrival of participants with the assignment of boats and subsequent training, will get into full swing on Friday 25 October and continue until Sunday 27. The event is supported by the Region of Sardinia and enjoys the patronage of Cagliari Municipality.

Composition and format of the teams

  • Teams: Each team is composed of two sailors, one man and one woman.
  • Age limit: Sailors must be under 25 years of age on 31 December 2024.
  • Race format: Two teams compete with two boats per team, for a total of four boats per race.
