2024 Women's World Match Racing Championships Applications Open

by Abi Peterson 13 Oct 06:11 UTC 3-8 December 2024

World Sailing and The Saudi Sailing Federation have confirmed the deadline for entries to the 2024 Women's Match Racing World Championship is 1st November.

World Sailing Technical Delegate, Anne Malledant said: "We have seen the excitement that the inaugural Puig Women's America's Cup is creating throughout the sport of sailing, and we want all women sailors who are being inspired by the racing in Barcelona to have the opportunity to apply to compete in the 2024 World Match Racing Championships at Jeddah Yacht Club & Marina. We have therefore decided to re-open the entry window and urge women sailors to apply.

"I have just returned from Jeddah and know from first-hand that the sailing conditions, the club facilities and the hospitality of the local people is second to none. What's more, as a woman, I say to others that may be concerned about the treatment of women in this part of the world, that they should put behind them all outdated concerns and prejudices that they may have. Change has happened and is continuing to happen at pace. Sailing in Saudi is growing, and all women are welcome here."

Saudi Sailing Federation CEO, Samia Bagdady added: "From Olympic champions to rising stars, women are leading the way in sailing, inspiring not just the next generation of athletes, but everyone with the courage to dream big. Join us as we celebrate their journeys and look ahead to the future they are helping to shape. This is a statement from America's Cup about the advent of the Puig Women's America's Cup and it is just as relevant to what is happening here in Saudi, the only difference is that we have not waited quite so long to implement change! I am a Saudi woman, I am a sailor and I invite all women sailors from around the world to join me at the World Championships in Jeddah in December."

America's Cup Event Director, Leslie Ryan said: "I have spent a considerable amount of time in Jeddah for the America's Cup Pre-Regatta and I have witnessed the speed of change. I urge women sailors not to be deterred by history but to embrace the opportunities that are being opened-up for us. Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina is a wonderful venue and I encourage women sailors to visit."

The Women's Match Racing World Championship will be from 3rd to the 8th of December, 2024 at Jeddah Yacht Club & Marina.
