The 40 skippers who will start the Vendée Globe 2024 were presented and spoke at Media Conference in La Seine Musicale, Paris.
The Singlehanded non-stop race around the world starts at Les Sables d'Olonne on 10 November. The 2024 edition will be back to full strength after the 2020 edition was hit by COVID restrictions. That means the creation of a 30,000sq metre race village, opening on October 19 and an expected visitor attendance of 1million - limited by free ticket entry.
The race is sailed in the IMOCA60 class, which is foiling capable. The entry was over-subscribed with all entrants having to complete several qualifying events, so only tested sailors and IMOCA60s can participate. The 40 strong field includes six female sailors, who qualified on the same basis as the male entrants - and a quota system was not used. At stake is a prize purse of €800,000 which will be distributed primarily between the top ten, with all finishers sharing in the balance.
