WANTED: Principal Yachting Instructor at RHKYC

The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is one of the world’s premier yacht clubs with an amazing legacy of over 170 years of competitive and social sailing and rowing. The Club runs a very active yacht racing programme which includes inshore, coastal and offshore racing based over three separate locations. The main site at Kellett Island is multidisciplinary and has its own well-equipped boatyard. Middle Island is the home to our dinghy and rowing training scheme, with Shelter Cove being primarily the home of cruising sailing.
We aim to enhance our training offering to support our large yachting community, and are now looking for a Principal Yachting Instructor to take on and further develop the training that has been previously undertaken by Asia Pacific Yachting Ltd (APY), a close affiliate of the Club.
The role is open to both Yacht Master Instructors (YMIs) and Cruising Instructors (CIs) who aim to gain their YMI within the next 18 months. The aim is for the candidate to take on the role of RYA Principal & Chief Instructor of the RYA-recognised yacht sail training centre and build on the success of APY. The candidate will be responsible for leading the development of the yacht training scheme and for delivering courses. There is also a pool of Hong Kong based YMIs and CIs who can be called upon to deliver some of the practical courses.
The goal of this role is for the RHKYC to become the principal centre of excellence in Asia for yacht training. This position will report directly to the Sailing Manager, and will play a significant part in the Club’s vision to be the ultimate yacht club in Asia and one of the best in the world for sailing.

• Develop the Club’s programmes so that the RHKYC is seen as a centre of excellence in Asia for yacht training.
• Develop and deliver inspiring training both afloat and ashore to meet required outcomes.
Job Description:
Course Delivery:
• Produce course programmes for both ashore and afloat.
• Organise and coordinate the day-to-day operations of all yacht training activities.
• Engage with Hong Kong instructor base to optimise the volume and types of courses delivered.
• Monitor the quality of course delivery to ensure they are to the required standard.
• Supporting the office in managing administrative duties such as issuing RYA certificates for accredited courses, coordinating course and facility bookings (and stock) and recording sailing achievements.
Training Course Development:
• Review training requirements.
• Developing, updating and production of course material for courses both ashore and afloat.
• Develop an instructor training programme to widen the instructor base.
Course Infrastructure:
• Monitor the training equipment serviceability to ensure its fit for purpose.
• Forecast future equipment requirements and lead on its procurement.
Health and Safety and Safeguarding
• Ensure the required health and safety protocols are implemented.
• Ensure the safe running of the yachts at sea in accordance with RYA and HKMD regulations, RHKYC operating procedures and the law.
• Ensuring operational safeguarding policies and practices are followed & safeguarding is actively promoted throughout the organization.
Others
• Perform other reasonable duties as assigned by the Sailing Manager.
Requirements:
1. Knowledge of RYA training schemes, and capable of teaching/delivering most of the RYA yachting syllabus. Preferably with yacht operations and maintenance experience.
2. Must be an RYA Cruising Instructor with valid commercial endorsement. Preferably with an RYA Yacht Master Instructor qualification, RYA Yacht Master Examiner, RYA Yacht Master Ocean, RYA Theory Instructor, RYA Sea Safety Instructor, RYA Diesel Engine Instructor, RYA SRC Instructor, RYA Radar Instructor or RYA Power Boat Instructor.
3. Minimum 1 year's experience of delivering RYA courses for YMI candidates.
4. Minimum 3 years’ experience of delivering RYA courses for CI candidates.
5. IT literate.
6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
7. Ability to motivate, inspire and educate students and colleagues.
8. Ability to command a high level of coaching and mentoring.
9. Good leadership and management qualities.
10. Preferably with good record keeping skills, and proven ability to prioritise tasks.
