Stewart Brewing Squib UK National Championships 2024 at Royal Forth Yacht Club - Overall

by Vincent Delany 22 Jun 2024 15:50 UTC 15-21 June 2024

Prior to the last race of the Squib Nationals, two boats had dominated the racing Micky Wright's 'Spoof' from the Royal Corinthian YC on Hyde Sails on 20 points and Mark Hogan's 'RicO'Shea' from South Caernarvonshire YC on Batt Sails on 24 points.

On Friday when rigging, it appeared that the Squibs would get a stronger breeze than they had enjoyed all week, but once in the race area, the offshore wind was only about 6 knots from the south west.

The start line must have had a bias towards the committee vessel, but near the pin end there was a match race taking place between 'Spoof' and 'RicO'Shea'.

Meanwhile, Malcolm Hutchings 'Lady Penelope' took a route to the windward mark on the right hand side of the course and led the fleet around the first windward mark. On the long run, the wind shifted twenty degrees to the south which appeared to allow some compression of the fleet. At the first leeward gate boats rounded four abreast which favoured those on the inside.

The following beat was quite one sided but the wind was shifty which created some passing lanes. On the final beat the windward mark was moved 500m south and the right hand side of this beat enjoyed goof wind shifts and had more pressure.

At the finish the order was Malcolm Hutchings 'Lady Penelope', Malcolm Blackburn's 'Moonstone' and Dick Batt's 'Squib'. 'Spoof' finished in 6th with 'RicO'Shea' one place behind. This was sufficient for 'Spoof' crewed by Alex Porteous to win the Squib National Championship for 2024.

Congratulations also go to Royal Forth YC for running an efficient and enjoyable championships.

Royal Forth Yacht Club would like to thank the sponsors and supporters of this regatta, Stewart Brewing, Pickering's Gin, Batt Sails and Hyde Sails.
