by Vicky Cox 23 May 05:18 UTC 17-19 May 2024

Sponsored by Tudor, Plas Heli, Firmhelm, Partington Marine and Roland Marine.

It almost seems a certainty that the Welsh IRCs in Pwllheli brings glorious champagne sailing weather and this year conformed as usual.

With IRC classes and YTC cruiser classes, this years event also included the Sonata National Championships and included a variety of sailing from round fixed marks to Windward/leewards and full coastal sailing.

The cruiser class enjoyed some beautiful sails around Tremadog bay with Race Officer Robin Evan’s setting a course taking in Porthmadog fairway buoy in one race.

Meanwhile in IRC, Race Officer Mike Butterfield persevered in challenging light winds to set a mix of courses producing some very close and competitive racing.

IRC1 winners and overall IRC Welsh National Champion was Impetuous (Miller Crompton Hodges), with Old School (Ian Macmillan) taking the IRC 2 top spot.

The Cruiser Class Champion was Theia, sailed single handed by Tim Rouse and the Sonata Welsh National Championship was taken by Aquila (Nick Holt).

Complimenting the ISORA feeder race from Dun Laoghaire the week before the IRC Welsh National event, is a return race on Saturday 25th May.
